This month marks the 50th anniversary of the first Freedom Riders who dared challenge segregation in the southern United States.  The group of seven blacks and six whites boarded two public buses in Washington, D.C.  and headed for the Deep South.  Along the way, they were targeted with the White Riders receiving the most severe beatings.

The courage of young Americans — black and white — pushed the race discussion onto the national stage where the two men most widely viewed as the leaders of the Civil Rights movement remained until their deaths. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Malcolm X differed in their approach…but never about the destination.  TheVillage presents their “Two Paths to Freedom” produced by Zachary Hardwick.
