Millions of African-Americans will load up the car, stand in long lines at the airport, or walk a few blocks to be with family the July 4th holiday weekend. There will be great food, loud laughter, and family folklore served alongside the barbecue.
For many, the family narrative began in the South. Their grandparents or parents were part of The Great Migration, a massive movement of Blacks from the southern states to points north, east, and west. Author Isabel Wilkerson has written a meticulously researched and beautifully moving book about the courageous blacks who left behind the familiar in search of “The Warmth of Other Suns.”
