A memorial to one of Africatown’s founders, Cudjoe Lewis, sits in front of a local church.

Residents of Africatown, Alabama, welcomed Black History Month 2023 with their annual “Spirit of our Ancestors Festival” which honors the 110 captives aboard Clotilda, the last slave ship. When slavery ended, they longed to return home to Africa ,but a lack of money kept them in America. They built the only 19th-century settlement founded by the formerly enslaved that still exists.

TheVillageCelebration takes you to Africatown for a tour of the historic area.
