The 117th National Baptist Congress of Christian Education Convention Convenes in Saint Louis
TheVillageCelebration talked with Rev. Sammie Jones of Mount Zion Baptist Church in Saint Louis. Rev. Jones is a dedicated servant in his church, his community and now with the upcoming Baptist Convention.
TVC: What is the purpose of the Baptist Convention… its goals and direction for 2012?
Rev. Jones: It’s the largest traveling school/university in the Baptist faith. We will have over three hundred courses beginning Tuesday morning, June 19. The main purpose is the educational piece, but we will also have singing, preaching, teaching, major worship, and some seven hundred vendors selling their wares.
TVC: What is the theme of this year’s conference?
Rev. Jones: The president has a five year theme, “Solidarity with the Savior.” And this year the focus is on Sunday school and Baptist training.
TVC: It’s no secret that you have had a profound impact on the city of the St. Louis with your involvement in so many projects. What is your role during he convention?
Rev. Jones: We are doing a number of things. The host committee, of which I am chair, is partnering with Habitat for Humanity to build a house. Five are under construction, and one is dedicated to the Baptist. We are the co-sponsors raising funds for the house that’s located at 1024 Bates off Grand. Also, we are doing a family wellness day and community event over in East St. Louis, Illinois at the Second Chance Shelter where we will have various health care screenings, children activities, evangelism and bringing people to Christ.
We asked Rev. Jones about his Mount Zion Church Family’s participation in this summer’s convention. This is what he said:
