GEORGE ZIMMERMAN GUN AUCTION CANCELED
Plans to auction the gun George Zimmerman used to kill 17 year-old Trayvon Martin were halted today just minutes before the bidding began. In an audaciously bold move, Zimmerman decided to sell the gun. The former neighborhood watchman told a Florida television station the pistol was returned to him by the U.S. Justice Department after he was acquitted in 2013.
Tracy Martin, Trayvon’s father, released a statement about the attempt to auction the gun.
“The Trayvon Martin Foundation is committed to its mission of ending senseless gun violence in the United States. We are laser focused on furthering that mission. As such, the foundation has no comment on the actions of that person that murdered Trayvon.” Tracy Martin, Trayvon’s father
The auction for the 9 mm Kel-Tec PF-9 was scheduled to start at 11:00 a.m. EST and end 24 hours later. But, minutes after the bidding was to begin, the weapon was removed from the GunBroker.com website.
According to the auction listing, a portion of the proceeds from the auction would be used to fight what Zimmerman called violence by the Black Lives Matter movement and the campaign of Democratic Presidential candidate Hillary Clinton.
Clinton is the keynote speaker for the annual Circle of Mothers Conference organized by Sybrina Fulton, Trayvon’s mother. The conference will be held May 20-22. Fulton endorsed Clinton for President in January, calling the former Secretary of State a champion of gun control.
Zimmerman shot and killed Martin in a gated community in Orlando in 2012. He claimed he acted in self-defense, but the killing of Martin along with the police-involved killings of Michael Brown, Eric Garner, Walter Scott and others sparked a national debate and a renewal of social justice efforts not seen since the Civil Rights Movement.
